Energy Work

“All our thoughts, regardless of their content, first enter our systems as energy.  Those that carry emotional, mental, psychological or spiritual energy produce biological responses that are then stored in our cellular memory.  In this way our biographies are woven into our biological systems, gradually, slowly, every day.”

Caroline Myss, Anatomy of the Spirit, p. 40.

“Illness in any form is nothing more than our negative energies choking off so much of our Life flow—those higher frequencies that are our natural state—that cellular damage results.”

“What causes illness is body-starving, the disallowance of Life Source energy so critical to health and well-being.”

Lynn Grabhorn, Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting, pp. 230 and 233.

If you overheard someone saying that they could tap into universal life force energy and then use that energy to heal people, you might think that the person was recounting an episode of Star Trek.  However, this is exactly what a Reiki practitioner can do.  Needless to say, the notion of “energy” requires a bit of explanation.

On the one hand, “energy” is a fairly easy notion to grasp.  As we all know, we store energy in our bodies which allows us to do “work,” e.g. walking up a flight of stairs, carrying a bag of groceries, running a marathon, etc.  And we know that if we exercise, eat a nutritious diet, and get enough sleep, we should have enough energy to get us through daily life.  However, if we eat poorly, do not exercise, do not sleep enough, have stressful jobs, etc., we can lose energy, become tired, depressed or ill.

On the other hand, the idea of “energy” in Reiki is a bit more complex.  In addition to the energy we store in our bodies, we must acknowledge that there is energy all around us.  Anyone who has had a sunburn knows about solar energy; anyone who has been through a windstorm, not to mention tornado or a hurricane, knows about wind energy; anyone who has gotten seasick on a boat knows about wave energy; and anyone who has seen active volcanoes knows about the tremendous amounts of energy stored within the earth.  More subtle is the energy that helps things grow.  If we plant a seed in the garden, a plant grows.  Where did the plant get the energy? It taps into nutrients in the soil, from water, and from sunlight.  Energy from the sun converts light into energy in the process of photosynthesis.  As mentioned, Reiki in Japanese translates loosely as “universal life force energy.”  A Reiki practitioner is able to tap into energy in the universe just as a plant grabs energy from its surroundings.  Moreover, Reiki practitioners are attuned and trained to channel that energy through their own bodies and into the bodies of clients, who then receive its healing benefits.

When our bodies are ill, out of balance, stressed out or overworked, our own energy systems become inefficient.  In this condition, our bodies cannot heal ourselves.  A Reiki treatment (or a series of treatments) helps balance the body’s own natural energy systems and can begin to heal itself.  Reiki practitioners work primarily in balancing energy in the chakras.
